Eligibility

CAPCON 2011 is a contest for plastic-based scale models, and is open to all modellers. Membership in an IPMS Chapter or other National body is not required.

Junior Division categories are limited to members 16 years and younger. Junior members may, at their own discretion, enter their models in non-Junior divisions.

All entrants must be present at the show in order to participate.

All entries must be the sole work of the individual whose name is on the entry form. Commercially built and / or commercially pre-finished models that do not require significant additional work by the modeller are ineligible.

Models that have won first, second, or third place or Out-of-Box awards in any category of any previous CAPCON show may not be entered in any subsequent CAPCON show for awards except if the model is to be entered in the Collections category. Any collection that has been entered (in part or in whole) in a previous CAPCON cannot be re-entered in CAPCON 2011.

The Head Judge will exclude or remove from competition any entry considered by CAPCON Steering Committee officials to be inappropriate or offensive to generally acknowledged standards of taste and acceptability. If in doubt, please contact the CAPCON Steering Committee prior to the show.

Modellers submitting oversized entries or those with special requirements must notify the CAPCON Steering Committee at least 1 month prior to the show, as limited display space requires pre-planning for such entries. Failure to provide advance notification for such models could result in those models being placed apart from the general display area or having inadequate special support.

Exhibitors are encouraged to leave their models in the Display Room until the Awards Ceremony is over and the attendees have had maximum viewing opportunity.

CAPCON will not be responsible for unclaimed awards given to modellers who leave the show after judging but prior to the Awards Ceremony. It is recommended that the departing participant make arrangements with a fellow participant to accept any prize that may be awarded. Otherwise, arrangements should be made with the CAPCON Steering Committee prior to the participant’s departure to have the award delivered at their expense.

Definitions and Judging

Judging

Models will be judged for skill in construction, finish, realism, and accuracy. Additional criteria are considered for special categories such as dioramas and collections.Contest Registrars will help determine the appropriate category for models during the time of registration, but final category placement is at the discretion of contest judges. Judges may also combine or split categories during judging as they deem appropraite.

Models may be handled by judges for proper category placement ONLY if the owner cannot be located. IPMS Ottawa, the CAPCON Steering Committee, contest judges, and anyone involved with the CAPCON event will not assume any liability for any loss or damage to models or other items brought to the event.

Models in the Display Room may be covered by cases while on general public display, but such cases must be removed from models for judging. Prior to judging, the owner must remove the case, or the case may be removed by judges ONLY if the owner cannot be located.

Plastic-based

Models entered into competition at CAPCON 2011 should be at least 75% plastic-based. The use of photoetch and white-metal parts on models is allowed.

For the purposes of CAPCON 2011, "plastic" is considered to be "any thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer, resin, or other material that can be formed by heat, pressure, or vacuum-forming." This includes, but is not necessarily limited to the following: polystyrene, ABS plastic, celluloids, polyethylene, vinyls, epoxy and polyester resins, fiberglass, acetates, acrylics, nylon, other synthetic and monofilament fibers, and other plastic modeling compounds. Glazes and body putties (e.g., "Green Stuff") are not considered to be plastic; however, when used for filling seams, improving contours, creating unusual surfaces (e.g., "zimmerit" on armor), etc., they will be considered plastic.

Scratchbuilt

Scratch-built models may incorporate parts from other kits however the majority of the model must consist of modeller-fabricated parts. If a scratch-built model is entered into a regular category, there will be no special consideration given to the fact that it was scratch-built.

Major Conversion

Entries to this category must represent a version different from that provided by the basic kit. The conversion must contain significant structural modifications to the basic kit involving extensive changes in contour or configuration. These changes must be the work of the entrant. Simple conversions or conversions using aftermarket or commercially-available parts must be entered in regular categories. The builder must detail the conversion changes made to the basic kit on the entry sheet. Photos and extras will not be allowed on the table but they must be available to the judges upon request.

Markings

In aircraft and vehicle classes, markings will determine the category in which a model is entered.

Bases / Dioramas

Bases will be allowed in all categories but will not be considered in the judging except in the Diorama or Vignette categories.

Judges
  • All participants may volunteer to be judges.
  • All volunteers must attend the Head Judge’s briefing.
